Scholarships

FOUNDERS' SCHOLARSHIPS

The Founders Scholarships are awards presented by Jack McNally and Doug Smith to a McNally Smith College applicant who:

   1. best demonstrate their ambition to pursue a career in music
   2. exhibit exceptional abilities in their field
   3. have maintained a good academic record
   4. demonstrate financial need.

AwardsThe scholarships are awarded up to $1,000 per semester for full-time attendance for the academic year ($2000 total).  Amounts may vary depending on the McNally Smith College Scholarship Selection Committee’s approval.  Second semester renewal is automatic as long as the student achieves a grade point average of 3.0 for each semester's work and enrolls full-time during the academic year awarded.
Eligible ApplicantsAny McNally Smith College of Music students who will be attending the 2008-2009 school year.
Eligible CriteriaScholarship applicants must submit a McNally Smith College of Music scholarship application (available for download), official high school/college transcripts, an audition for admissions, and two letters of reference and/or faculty recommendations.
DeadlineApplications must be postmarked no later than March 1, 2008.
AcceptanceApplicants must be a current McNally Smith College student, or have applied for admission by March 1, 2008.

Scholarship recipients may be expected to represent McNally Smith College in promoting music education at public and/or school-related events, as well as be a role model for other students.


About Jack McNally and Doug Smith:
Jack McNally’s vision to start a music school began while teaching at the MacPhail Center, then a part of the University of Minnesota. Jack is active in the business and financial operations of the college and is the Chairman of the Board of Directors while continuing to be active as a guitarist, songwriter, and singer.

Jack is past president of the Minnesota Music Academy, a member of NARAS (National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, the GRAMMY organization) and recipient of the 2000 Outstanding Musicians of the 20th Century. Jack was named to the INC 500 as chairman of one of the fastest growing organizations in the country and is listed in the Who's Who in Executives and Professionals.

Doug Smith has worked with many music professionals to create the curriculum and develop each program the school offers. Doug is a classical guitarist, lutist, composer, and author of the 12 volume series, Doug Smith’s Classical Guitar Method [McNally Smith College Press] and the best seller Classical Guitar for Young Children . Doug’s music is recorded on the Munificent label. A graduate of Winona State University, Doug served as National Education Chairman of the Guitar Division of the American String Teachers Association. Doug serves on the board of the Saint Paul Conservatory of Music.
