Professional Experience: As a flutist, Janis is particularly devoted to working with living composers and new music. She has premiered over 100 new works and been part of over 30 commissions. A founding member and co-artistic director of the Sylmar Chamber Ensemble, Janis has also performed with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Intergalactic Contemporary Ensemble, Minnesota Composers Forum, and many other ensembles. She freelances in the Twin Cities area.

She developed and taught innovative courses in career development and music business at the University of Minnesota, Augsburg College, and University of St. Thomas, and flute at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls and MacPhail Center for Music.

Janis serves on the Commission for the Education of the Professional Musician of the International Society for Music Education (ISME). She has presented workshops, papers, and poster sessions on a variety of musician career issues nationally and internationally at conferences of ISME in Hanoi, Vietnam and Barcelona, Spain, and in Bologna, Italy in 2008, in addition to the College Music Society, Suzuki Association of the Americas, Minnesota Music Teachers Association, Minnesota Music Educators Association, National Careers Conference 2005, Minnesota Career Development Association, and National Flute Association.

Professional Experience:

Stuart Anderson is Associate Professor of Physics and Assistant Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning at Augsburg College in Minneapolis. He has taught there since 1989. His research has ranged from the ozone hole and global warming to the acoustics of saxophones, taking him from Pittsburgh to Boston to Texas to Alaska to Heidelberg Germany as well as Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. 

Stuart has taught the full range of undergraduate physics courses and recently created a new course designed explicitly for fine arts majors (Physics for the Fine Arts) that explores phenomena and perception from a scientific perspective in the context of the arts.

Professional Experience: Richard has taught writing and literature courses at Normandale Community College, Inver Hills Community College, Century College, Minneapolis Community and Technical College, and the University of Minnesota for many years, after a long career as a Hennepin County probation officer. Richard has taught at McNally Smith as well, and very much enjoys the creative students at McNally Smith College of Music.

Professional Experience: Linda Chacholiades studied at the University of Georgia, Mozarteum Conservatory, Salzburg, Austria, and holds a Master of Music Degree in Piano Performance from Cleveland Institute of Music. She has performed in several piano competitions including the 1998 Gerschefski Competition where she was awarded honorable mention. She was a finalist in both the 2001 Greek Women’s University Club Music Competition, Chicago, IL, and in the 2001 Ludmilla Knezkova-Hussey International Piano Competition, Bathurst, Canada.

Ms. Chacholiades has studied piano with Jerome Rose, Evgeny Rivkin, Anita Pontremoli, Daniel Shapiro, and harpsichord with Egbert Ennulat. She formerly served on the faculty of Berkshire Community College, Georgia Perimeter College, and Gainesville State College where she was in demand as an accompanist and chamber musician, as well as a solo pianist. She currently teaches courses in Music History, Music Theory, and Keyboard at McNally Smith College of Music.

Since relocating to the Twin Cities area, Ms. Chacholiades has maintained a very active private piano studio. Her students have received awards in competitions and performed in Master classes with world-renowned musicians such as Dr. Maurice Hinson. Ms. Chacholiades is frequently called upon to judge young artist competitions.

Ms. Chacholiades has continued to pursue her own musical interests as a post graduate student at University of Minnesota and is an active member of College Music Society, Saint Paul Piano Teachers Association, and the Minnesota chapter of Music Teachers National Association.

Professional Experience: A native of Chicago, Illinois, saxophonist Steve Cole is one of the most  celebrated players in contemporary jazz, having sold hundreds of thousands  of albums worldwide and scored five #1 R&R Smooth Jazz hits. He attended  Northwestern University, where he explored modern classical music for the  saxophone under the tutelage of internationally recognized educator Fred  Hemke. While in undergraduate school, this gifted musician was a  semi-finalist in the National Foundation for the Advancement in the Arts and  one of three finalists in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition and was awarded the privilege of performing Tableaux De Provence  by Paule Maurice with the Orchestra.  Cole went on to earn his MBA at  the University of Chicago, Booth School of business, which paved the way in  his being appointed to Professor Music Business Management at Columbia College Chicago before coming to McNally Smith College.
                       
The artist has seven CDs in his  catalog and has previously recorded for Atlantic, Warner Brothers, Shanachie  and EMI/Blue Note. Recently Steve signed a multiple album deal with Mack Avenue/Artistry Music. The first project for the label entitled  Moonlight is a collection of classic pop songs and standards set amidst an orchestral backdrop. The project includes such iconic songs as the Bacharach  & David penned The Look of Love, folk songs Cry Me a River, Shenandoah, The Long and Winding Road (Beatles) and Close Your Eyes (James Taylor) to  name a few. In addition to the strings, the arrangements include tastefully  placed harp, woodwinds and tempered brass. The supporting rhythm section is  comprised of Mike Logan (Will Downing) on keyboards, Russell Ferrante  (Yellowjackets) piano and Steve Rodby (Pat Metheny Group) on bass. The  string arrangements were provided by the very talented composer/arranger Michael Cunningham.
                       
Cole began his professional career, playing sessions and club dates wherever possible; he recorded with blues  legend Junior Wells and began playing, writing and producing with Atlantic  Records artists Brian Culbertson. His visibility at the label grew, and soon  Cole signed his own deal with Atlantic. He released his debut disc, Stay  Awhile, in 1998; it yielded the hits “Where the Night Begins,” “When I Think  of You” and “Say It Again” and earned Cole a Prism Award for Best New Artist  at the 2000 Oasis Smooth Jazz Awards. Additionally, Steve has toured and/or  recording with Boz Scaggs, Larry Carlton, Jeff Lorber Brian Culbertson,  Freddie Cole, Cyrus Chestnut, KMFDM, Rick Braun and is a founding member,  along with Jeff Kashiwa and Kim Waters of The Sax Pack.
                       
An accomplished Musician, Writer and  Producer, Steve is currently under contract as a recording artist with  Mack Avenue/Artistry  Music, and as a writer with  Universal Music Publishing where he has published over 50  works.

Professional Experience: Billy Franklin is an accomplished musician with a passion for teaching the humanities and art history. He has taught humanities and literature at the Institute of Production and Recording in Minneapolis, and taught Spanish at New York University and Macalester College. A native of Venezuela, Billy also has a long history as a performing songwriter, electronic musician and producer.

Professional Experience: Chris earned a B.S. in Mathematics and an M.S. in Mathematics Education from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.  He has taught math at a variety of secondary and post-secondary institutions, including Madison Area Technical College, Santa Monica College, and New Roads School in Los Angeles.  As a member of the Center for Effective learning, he explored technologies like dynamic geometry software and perceptual learning modules that enhance learning in the classroom.  In addition, Chris studied recording engineering at the Aspen Music School and has assisted Ron Streicher, former President of the Audio Engineering Society, in recording a variety of classical music events in Los Angeles.

Professional Experience:

Dr. Dan Halvorsen is Adjunct Assistant Professor in the University of Minnesota Medical School Physiology Department, Clinical Director of the Exercise Medicine Center, and Team Physiologist for the University of Minnesota sports teams. He also serves as team physiologist for Minnesota’s professional sports teams.  

Also an avid musician, Dan is Music Physiologist for the UMN and for McNally Smith College of Music. He plays jazz and classical string bass with several groups, sings in choral ensembles, and enjoys composing piano music in his spare time. Dan received his bachelor’s degree from St. Olaf College and his PhD from the University of Minnesota in Physiology and Kinesiology.

Professional Experience:

Jerry has performed on shows with Don Ross, Tommy Emmanuel, Bob Brozman, and Andy McKee. He was a featured performer at major festivals including the Walnut Valley Festival, Canadian Guitar Festival, and National Resophonic Festival. Jerry's teaching experience includes being a member of the faculty at Northern Arizona University and MacPhail Center for Music and he was the winner of the Zietgiest Eric Stokes Song Contest in 2000 and 2001. 

Jerry was the recipient of Jerome Foundation Grant and has received Artist Endorsements from National Resophonic Guitars and Petros Guitars. A member of ASCAP, the Minnesota Guitar Society and the American Composers Forum, Jerry has recorded two CDs of original music for solo guitar, "Many Dances" and "Sounds Like This."

His compositions "Matagalpa" and "Many Dances" garnered him awards. His compositions range in style from classical to blues to modern progressive acoustic. As a performer, Jerry is usually found sharing the stage with his pedal board and rack of gear featuring the Gibson Echoplex.

Professional Experience:

Mike has performed throughout the northeast and metro Atlanta areas in various Jazz, Rock, Funk, Country, Big Band, and Theater groups. An honors graduate from Berklee College of Music and Georgia State University, Mike has been teaching for almost twenty years. He is the author of “The Complete Beginning Guitarist” and well as a wealth of educational materials that will soon be released in an upcoming book.

Before joining the faculty at McNally Smith, Mike taught at Georgia State University (as a graduate assistant), Atlanta Institute of Music and the Lovett School. During the summer of 2009 Mike played guitar for the premier of “Power Balladz” at the Lab Theater in Minneapolis. He maintains an active home studio in Woodbury, MN.

Currently, Mike is pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Guitar Performance under Jeffery Van at the University of Minnesota with a secondary emphasis in Music Education under the guidance of Dr. Scott Lipscomb. His interests include advanced improvisational techniques, the integration of technology in music education, assessment in music performance, and curriculum development. Mike plays Kenny Hill classical guitars. He is an active member of the College Music Society, Guitar Foundation of America, and Association for Technology in Music Instruction.

Professional Experience: April began her career teaching all areas of English and Speech Communications for eight years in secondary schools. In 2003, she moved into higher education, teaching at St. Cloud State University, The College of St. Catherine, Inver Hills Community College, University of Wisconsin-River Falls and for three years as an adjunct at McNally Smith.  Primarily, she’s taught introductory composition, but has also branched out to creative and argumentative writing. In addition to teaching, April participated in community, high school and college theater for 15 years. She was involved in all aspects of production including acting, singing, lighting, set and costume design, and directing.  She was a founding director of Mora Area Community Theater and directed plays for several years in that community.

Professional Experience: Jake Mohan is a writer and musician living in Minneapolis. He holds a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from the University of Minnesota, where he wrote a memoir about playing drums in a struggling indie-rock band. He has written about music and other subjects for the Utne Reader, City Pages, the Star-Tribune, Reveille Magazine, The Onion, and other publications. Mohan currently plays drums in the eclectic Minneapolis band Run at the Dog.

At McNally Smith, Jake teaches Music Journalism and Writing and Research and is the faculty adviser to The Decibel, the campus newspaper.

Professional Experience: Milwaukee, Wisconsin native with direct Nigerian ancestry, Nneka Onyilofor has attained her B.S. in Family Social Science and Master of Liberal Studies (M.L.S.) degree from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. Her experience in the U of M academy has been vital, as her concentration in African American and African Studies, and Global Studies has significantly broadened her scope. Being passionate about youth and her community, Nneka expanded her mission to West Africa, as she completed her master’s thesis on globalization in West African contemporary culture, with a major focus on Ghanaian hip-life music. She has studied in Ghana and French-speaking Mali. Additionally, in Spring 2008, she journeyed to Rio de Janeiro and Salvador (Bahia) Brazil to learn more about the African diaspora.
 
She has worked at African American Family Services and at the University of Minnesota as an Admissions Counselor. She was also the lead instructor for two black history courses at the University of MN and coordinated and taught a college preparation course at the Brian Coyle Center in Minneapolis.
 
Her other interests include writing, as she was a freelance writer for the Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder Newspaper and has been published in the Minneapolis Liberator and the African News Journal. She was also the founder of Moonlight Poetry, which was an open mike venue in Minneapolis, and participated in the 2008 Givens Black Writer's Retreat in Minnesota which included a personal mentorship by Amiri Baraka and a performance in the group "Nu Griots." She is currently a program director with a locally based networking and entertainment group called African Global Roots, which successfully had their first annual African arts festival summer 2009.

Professional Experience: Elise has taught acting and theatre at institutions across the country and is currently in the final stages of her PhD program with UC Santa Barbara. An experienced performer and director, Elise has directed over 25 fully produced plays, including children’s shows, classical & contemporary pieces, and several original works, and has participated in workshops with Patsy Rodenburg, Marcel Marceau and Aquila Theatre among others. She enjoys working with musicians in developing poise, confidence, and professional presentation and collaboration skills.

Becky developed her Scandinavian heritage musical traditions into performance of Swedish and Norwegian fiddle traditions, studying extensively in Norway and Sweden. She researches, performs, and teaches the Swedish nyckelharpa (key fiddle) and Norwegian hardingfele (Hardanger fiddle) music at venues across the U.S. Other Training: Studies on Swedish and Norwegian fiddle traditions, in U.S. and Scandinavia, 1981-present. Courses attended at Ole Bull Akademiet, Österbybruk, and Erik Sahlström Institute. Classical violin studies from 1968-1989.

Professional Experience: Teresa Whitman is an award winning, published poet, fiction, and creative non-fiction writer, teacher, and editor. She has taught writing and literature at the University of St. Thomas and the University of Minnesota. As a writer, she has received awards from the Minnesota State Arts Board, The Loft Literary Center, the Academy of American Poets, and many others. Her poetry has been published by New Rivers Press, Milkweed Editions, The Loft,  Agassiz Review, Black Hat Press, and others. As the sister of two professional musicians, Terri is particularly interested in what connects literature, music, and the visual arts, in the music of language, and in how the analytical mind aids the created mind.

Professional Experience: Anabel began her career in education at the Saint Paul Jewish Community Center leading youth in after-school, summer, and arts programs, focusing in-particular on inclusion efforts to aid youth with special needs to enjoy the same programs alongside their peers.  While earning her bachelor’s at UW-Madison, she taught conversational English and led field trips for international students.  After finishing her degree in Montpellier, France, she attended the University of Pennsylvania where she furthered her studies in Language, Culture, and Education, and began tutoring graduate students in academic writing skills.  Studying Sociolinguistics by day and teaching “Beginning English” by night in West Philadelphia, Anabel enjoyed turning theory to practice, and committed herself to creating inclusive learning environments fostering social awareness and responsibility to the community.  Back in Saint Paul, she has returned to the JCC, assisting youth with Autism perform in theater productions.  At McNally Smith, she works to build relationships within the community, coordinating the college’s efforts in outreach and events among students, staff, and faculty. Musically, Anabel is an avid fiddler with a particular fondness for Irish, Bluegrass, and especially Old Time fiddling styles.
